VOICE STUDIO now in its 6th year, is a program developed by vocal coach Kim Macko and music & video producer Noah Manheimer (author of this post). It combines vocal training with recording and video production in a studio environment.
In our week-long July 2019 session, we did vocal exercises that explored the topics of breath control, tone and expression. Each student memorized, practiced and recorded a song of their choice. We also created a group recording and music video of "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten.
It started with the vocal arrangement. Each singer was given a solo, and they sang the choruses as a group. Kim rehearsed the song with the group for three days, and then it was time to record. Kim coached the singers during the recording sessions, putting them at ease and bringing out a great performance from each of them.
We all collaborated on a storyboard for the music video, based on the song's lyrics. The working motto was: if you can imagine it, we can figure out a way to film it.
Over the course of 3 high energy hours, we shot the music video with 1 DSLR camera, 3 lights, a green screen, a tall ladder, and a very helpful intern (thanks Alex). The girls rose to the occasion and gave amazing performances, singing along to their recorded tracks, and acting each scene according to the storyboard.
I then mixed the audio, and assembled and edited the video footage, again following our collaborative storyboard.
Enjoy the video!
Each vocalist chose a song to work on and record. They were coached my Kim on breath control, tone, expression and microphone technique, throughout the week and during the recording session. They recorded in our studio using the same equipment we use for professional artists.
